So this evening I decided to watch "The Queens Cousins" and never in my life have I been more angry. Her cousins are mentally disabled and they just denied them. When one of them died no one came to the funeral. The queen mother was some kind of giant donator to men cap but she wouldn't go and see her cousins. You know what? That is disgusting! As a British citizen I am meant to think the world of the royal family...well I don't. Not when they treat their own family like that.
The very view that people had of the mentally I'll make me furious to the point of almost seeing red! That these homes could treat sweet innocent people like this while druggies get the best treatment! It's still like this today a lot really. People always mock those who are disabled. They have no choice! They don't get to make the decision of weather or not to have this disease! Look at the Victorians! They had their stupid little snuff boxes stuffed full of cocaine, their pipes full of opium! Did they get judged?! NO! But people with disabilities did, they would get locked away from the world or just abandoned! Their own mothers wouldn't want them. This fills me with so much saddness that it is very much like that today. That people can test while the child is still in the womb weather or not they will be disabled physically or mentally and then have the option to terminate that pregnancy. Perhaps if you didn't want the child you shouldn't have gotten pregnant in the first place. Even if you wanted a baby you can't just change your mind, it's still a child. It is still your child.
I think of my brother and how much he got bullied and how difficult he finds things sometimes and how much crud he got! Just because he was different. Through no fault of his own he was different, he has tourrettes and NO not the swearing all the time thing. The ticks and the anger and the lack of concentration is his. He had the worst case in Britain at the age of 9. When people judge him it makes me so angry because they don't understand what a struggle it is for him. It is not fun watching your big brother struggle. People think tourettes is this hilarious thing! They think the same of OCD and it's really not and it makes me so angry that people can mock those who are different through no fault of their own.
The punk movement, now widely celebrated for being so "revolutionary" and different. Where is that praise for those who are naturally different? I don't quite see the difference. Difference is difference and how it can be celebrated in one area but not in the other baffles me. I know that a disability is not something to be celebrated but neither should someone with the difficulties be ridiculed. Where is there cosmo edition full of them saying how cool it is to be different? How amazing it is?
There isn't one.
When I say celebrated I don't mean balloons and party hats, I mean appreciation and respect for these people.
